About Five Letter Word Finder

What this site is

Five Letter Word Finder is a word search tool. You give it what you know about a word (letters in position, letters it contains, letters it doesn’t) and it lists every five-letter word that fits. Around the tool are reference pages and guides about five-letter words, written to help you search better.

Why it exists

Word puzzles built around five-letter words have become a daily habit for a lot of people. When you’re stuck, the useful question isn’t “what’s the answer?” but “what words are still possible?” Many word tools answer that slowly, bury the tool under advertising, or give unclear results when a letter repeats. This site aims to do the one job well: a fast search that handles repeated letters properly and works just as well on a phone as on a desktop.

Where the words come from

The word list is ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark LExicon), an English word list that its authors placed in the public domain and that is widely used in word games. We normalise it (lower case, letters A to Z only, duplicates removed), add the dictionary-level words from SCOWL (sizes up to 80, which bring in newer words and British and Commonwealth spellings), split everything by word length, and remove a short list of slurs. Proper nouns and abbreviations are never included. The result has 11,454 five-letter words. Nothing on this site is copied from another word finder’s database.

The combined list is broad. It includes plurals, verb forms and uncommon words, so some results will be unfamiliar, and a word being on the list doesn’t mean every game accepts it.

To show everyday words first, we mark a word as “common” when it appears in the smaller, everyday-vocabulary levels (10 to 35) of SCOWL, the Spell Checker Oriented Word Lists by Kevin Atkinson. SCOWL is Copyright 2000–2018 Kevin Atkinson and is used under its permissive licence, whose full text ships with the site’s source code. The larger SCOWL levels (up to 80) are also where the extra dictionary words come from.

Likely plurals (another word plus S or ES, such as TAPES or BOXES) are detected automatically, so you can hide them when a puzzle is unlikely to use one.

How your searches are handled

The finder runs entirely in your browser. When you first use it, your browser downloads the word list once, and every search after that is done on your own device. The finder doesn’t send what you type to a server. The Privacy Policy describes what data the site does handle, including standard server logs and any analytics or advertising services that are enabled.

Accessibility and speed

Every control has a visible label, works with a keyboard and has a visible focus outline. Result counts and input notes are announced to screen readers. Colours meet contrast guidelines in light and dark mode, and no information is conveyed by colour alone. Pages are served as static HTML with very little JavaScript, no web fonts and no large images, so they load quickly on slow connections. If something doesn’t work for you, please tell us.

Advertising

The site may show a small number of clearly labelled advertisements to cover its running costs. Ads are never placed inside the search form or between the form and its results, and there are no pop-ups.
