How to use the crossword solver

  1. Type the clue, for example “Fruit that keeps the doctor away”.
  2. Choose the answer length: count the squares in the grid.
  3. Type the letters you already have from crossing answers into their boxes; leave the rest empty.
  4. The best matches for your clue appear first, then every other word that fits the letters. Tap a best match to see its meaning and check it fits the clue.

How the clue matching works

Every word that fits the length and letters is checked against our Online Dictionary: words whose definitions, examples or synonyms share words with your clue rank highest. It works best for straightforward definition clues. Cryptic clues, wordplay, names and very new slang are harder to match, so use the letter pattern as well.

Crossword solving tips

  • Match the form of the clue. A plural clue usually has a plural answer, and a past-tense clue a past-tense answer.
  • Watch for abbreviations. A clue with an abbreviation (“Dr.”, “abbr.”) usually wants a short or abbreviated answer.
  • Question marks mean wordplay. A clue ending in “?” is often a pun, so think beyond the literal meaning.
  • Fill the crossings first. Every letter from a crossing answer narrows the list a lot.

Frequently asked questions

Can it solve NYT Mini crossword clues?

Yes. Enter the clue, the length (Mini answers are usually 3 to 5 letters) and any crossing letters. It works the same way for any crossword.

Why isn’t the right answer at the top?

Clue matching uses dictionary definitions, so wordplay, names and phrases may not rank first. Add crossing letters to narrow the list, and the answer will be among the words that fit.

Does it include phrases like “ONE AT A TIME”?

Only single words are listed. For multi-word answers, solve each word separately if you know where it breaks.
