How Words With Friends scoring differs from Scrabble

  • A different board. Triple-word squares sit three squares in from each corner, and triple-letter squares sit next to them, so one word can reach both. The centre square has no bonus.
  • A smaller bingo. Playing all seven tiles adds 35 points, compared with 50 in Scrabble.
  • Different letter values. 12 letters are worth a different amount:

Strategy tips

  • Aim for the TW–TL combination. Because the triple-word and triple-letter squares sit so close together near each edge, a high tile like J, Q, X or Z on the TL with the word reaching the TW can score huge.
  • Parallel plays add up. Laying a word alongside another forms several two-letter words at once, and each one scores.
  • Don’t open a TW for your opponent unless your move scores enough to be worth the risk.

Frequently asked questions

Is the board the same as the one in my app?

It uses the classic Words With Friends 15×15 layout. Some special game modes and events use different boards; for those, check that the bonus squares match before trusting the scores.

Which dictionary does it use?

Our word list, which combines the public-domain ENABLE list with extra dictionary words. Words With Friends uses its own list, so now and then a suggestion may not be accepted, or a word the game accepts may be missing here.

Is using a cheat board allowed?

It’s against the spirit of a game you’re playing against someone who isn’t using one. We built it for practice, learning new words and reviewing games afterwards.

I only want words from my tiles, not a board. Is there a simpler tool?

Yes: the Words With Friends cheat lists every word your tiles make, with WWF points.

Is this site affiliated with Words With Friends?

No. Words With Friends is a trademark of Zynga. This is an independent word tool.
