About the Mini

The Mini is a small daily crossword from The New York Times, usually a 5×5 grid that takes a minute or two. Like a full crossword, each answer fits a numbered clue across or down, and crossing answers share letters. Answers are often everyday words, abbreviations, names or short phrases written without spaces.

Tips for solving the Mini fast

  • Start with the clues you know instantly, then use their letters for the crossing answers.
  • Fill-in-the-blank clues (“___ and cheese”) are usually the quickest wins.
  • A clue in quotation marks is often a spoken phrase, and an abbreviated clue wants an abbreviated answer.
  • Short common letter patterns like -ED, -ER and -S endings often fit the last column or row.
