How to check a word
- Type a word, or several separated by spaces or commas.
- Press Check.
- Each word shows ✓ Valid or ✗ Not in the word list, its points and, where available, a short definition with a link to the full online dictionary entry.
Which word list is used?
Words are checked against the same list as our other tools: ENABLE, a public-domain word list made for word games, combined with SCOWL, an openly licensed English word list, for words of 2 to 15 letters. It contains standard English words, plurals and verb forms, but no proper nouns, abbreviations or words with hyphens or apostrophes.
This is not an official Scrabble dictionary. Tournament and club play use their own official lists, which differ between regions and editions, so a few words may be accepted in one and not the other. For casual games at home, this checker is a quick way to agree on a word. Scrabble is a trademark of its owners; this site isn’t affiliated with them.
How points are counted
Points use the standard English letter values: 1 for common letters like E, A and S; 2 for D and G; 3 for B, C, M and P; 4 for F, H, V, W and Y; 5 for K; 8 for J and X; and 10 for Q and Z. The total is the sum of the tiles, before any board bonuses.

Frequently asked questions
Is QI a valid word?
Yes, “qi” is in the word list and scores 11 points. Other short, high-scoring words include “za”, “xi” and “jo”.
Why does a real word show as not valid?
Names, abbreviations, hyphenated words and very new slang aren’t in the list. Very long words (over 15 letters) aren’t checked either, because they don’t fit on a standard board.
Can I check several words at once?
Yes, up to 20. Separate them with spaces or commas. The page link updates so you can share the result.
