Today's Wordle answer is on our Wordle Hint Today page, which updates on its own every night. It doesn't throw the word at you, though. The answer sits behind its own button at the bottom, under five hints that get stronger one at a time. That's on purpose. Most people who type "what is today's Wordle" into a search bar aren't actually hoping to have the game ruined. They're stuck on guess four or five, their streak is on the line, and they want a nudge.
We built that page because we kept running into the same problem ourselves. You search for help, click the first result, and the answer is sitting in the headline before you can look away. It stings. So this article explains how the daily word works, where to find it, and how to get exactly as much help as you want and not a letter more.
The short answer
- The answer: Open Wordle Hint Today and scroll to "Show today's Wordle answer." You can even reveal it one letter at a time.
- A hint instead: Use the hint ladder on the same page. It starts with how many vowels the word has and ends with its first and last letters.
- A hint that fits your game: Enter your guesses in the personal hint tool on that page. It colors them the way Wordle did and tells you what you haven't found yet.
- Yesterday's word: Check the past Wordle answers list, which goes back to the very first puzzle.
When does today's Wordle change?
Wordle gives everyone one puzzle per day, and the new one appears at midnight in your local time zone. That detail causes more confusion than you'd expect. At 8 p.m. in New York, players in Karachi or Sydney are already on tomorrow's word. If you search for "today's Wordle" and see a different puzzle number than the one on your screen, that's almost always the reason.
Our page handles this for you. It checks the date on your own device and, if you're a day ahead of the United States, it shows the puzzle for your date and tells you so. You can switch back with one tap if you're playing an older game.
A few other timing facts that come up a lot:
- Same word for everyone: Every player gets the same answer on the same calendar date. That's what makes comparing scores with friends fun.
- No time limit: The puzzle stays open all day. You don't lose anything by starting late, as long as you finish before your own midnight.
- Streaks count calendar days: Miss a day and your streak resets, even if you play twice the next day.
How to get today's Wordle answer without spoiling it
Here's the order we suggest, from the gentlest help to the answer itself. Stop as soon as the word clicks.
1. Count the vowels
The first hint on our page tells you how many of A, E, I, O and U are in the word. It sounds small, but it changes how you guess. Across all 1,928 answers so far, 1,126 of them (58%) have exactly two vowels, 592 have one, and 200 have three. Only seven answers had no standard vowel at all: NYMPH, TRYST, GLYPH, SHYLY, CRYPT, MYRRH and DRYLY. If the hint says "no vowels," you know Y is doing the work.
2. Check for repeated letters
Hint two says whether any letter appears twice. This one saves more streaks than any other, in our experience. Players rarely think to repeat a letter, but 600 of the 1,928 answers so far, about 31%, have a repeated letter. E is the most common repeat by far, followed by O, L and A. If you've been stuck on _ _ E _ E for three guesses, a double letter is often why.
3. Read the meaning
The third hint shows a dictionary definition of the answer with the word itself blanked out. We like this one best because it feels like a crossword clue rather than a giveaway. It comes from our own Online Dictionary, so you can look up any word you're unsure about too.
4. Get the first letter, then the last
Hints four and five give you the first letter and then the last. With both ends and your own colored tiles, the word usually falls into place.
5. Use the personal hint tool
This is the part we're proudest of. Instead of generic hints, you type in the guesses you've already made. The tool shows the same green, yellow and gray tiles you saw in the game, tells you how many words still fit, and gives you a hint that picks up from where you are, like "It contains the letter I" or "Letter 3 is A." It never tells you the last missing letter, so the final step is still yours.
What does today's Wordle start with?
The first-letter hint answers this directly for today's puzzle. If you're asking in general which letters Wordle answers tend to start with, we have real numbers. We looked at every answer from June 19, 2021 to September 29, 2026:
| First letter | Answers | Share |
|---|---|---|
| S | 288 | 14.9% |
| C | 170 | 8.8% |
| B | 145 | 7.5% |
| T | 129 | 6.7% |
| A | 124 | 6.4% |
| P | 115 | 6.0% |
| F | 107 | 5.5% |
| G | 102 | 5.3% |
At the other end, only two answers have started with Z, six with Y and fifteen with J. So if you're torn between two words and one starts with S or C, the odds lean that way. It's a nudge, not a rule, but it has saved us a guess more than once.
"Today's Wordle," "the Wordle" and the puzzle number
People search for this in a dozen ways: "what's the Wordle today," "what is the Wordle word today," "what is the Wordle of the day." They all mean the same thing: the single word that the New York Times picked for today's date.
Every puzzle also has a number. The first Wordle, on June 19, 2021, was puzzle zero, and the number goes up by one each day. Wordle #1,929 fell on September 30, 2026. The number shows up when you share your result, which makes it the easiest way to check you and a friend are talking about the same puzzle. Our hint page shows the number and date right at the top.
Is today's Wordle hard?
Some days feel easy and some days feel personal. We rate each day's word on our hint page as Easy, Fairly easy, Medium or Hard. The rating is our own, and it's based on four things we can measure:
- How common the word is: Everyday words are easier to think of than rare ones.
- Repeated letters: Words like GEESE or LEVEL trip people up.
- Less common letters: J, Q, X, Z, V, K, W and Y show up far less often. Across all answers, J appears in just 22 and Q in 28.
- Vowel count: A word with one vowel, or none, gives you less to work with.
The rating sits in the at-a-glance box at the top of the page. If you want to know why a word got its rating, there's a small reveal underneath that explains it without naming the word.
What kind of word will today's answer be?
You can't know today's word in advance, but you can know what kind of word it probably is. That alone cuts down the guessing.
When Josh Wardle first built the game for his partner, Palak Shah, she went through roughly 12,000 five-letter words and narrowed them down to about 2,500 that most people would recognize. That spirit has stuck. Wordle answers are familiar words, and our archive shows a few clear habits:
- Plurals are rare: Only 13 of the 1,928 answers end in a single S, and most of those aren't plurals at all: FOCUS, CHAOS, OASIS, BONUS, ATLAS. So plural guesses like TAPES or BOXES are unlikely to be the answer, even though Wordle accepts them as guesses.
- Past tenses are rare too: Eleven answers end in ED, and nearly all are words like BREED, GREED and SPEED, where the ED is part of the word, not a tense.
- ER is the most common ending: 111 answers end in ER, such as RULER and RIVER. CH, SE, TE and LY follow a long way behind.
- The middle loves vowels: A is the most common third letter (275 answers), and O and A share the lead for the second letter.
- The end loves E and Y: E closes 384 answers and Y closes 270, which is why so many strong guesses end in one of them.
Knowing this changes how we guess. When two words both fit our tiles, we pick the one that sounds like an everyday word, doesn't end in a plural S, and uses a common letter pattern. It's not a guarantee, but across a whole season of puzzles it adds up to fewer lost streaks.
If you want the full breakdown by position, our letter frequency guide goes through every letter in every spot.
Why a past answer might show up again
For almost five years, Wordle never repeated an answer. That changed on February 2, 2026, when CIGAR, the very first answer from June 2021, came back. Since then, older answers have been returning, mostly words first used in 2021, and our archive shows 25 repeats through September 29, 2026, including SQUAD, LINEN, SMILE and FORTH.
What does that mean for you? You can no longer rule a word out just because it was used before. If you like to check, our past Wordle answers page has a box where you type a word and it tells you every date it was the answer.
What was yesterday's Wordle?
Yesterday's answer is on the Wordle hint page, hidden behind a button so you don't see it by accident. The full list is on the past answers page, grouped by year, with each word's date and puzzle number. Tap any word in the list to read what it means.
The routine we use every morning
We test our tools on the real puzzle every day, so we've settled into a routine that keeps the game fun:
- Open with a strong word. When we tested every common five-letter word against all 1,928 answers, IRATE, RAISE and ARISE left the fewest possibilities on average. We wrote up the full results in our starting words guide.
- Play two guesses without help. Most of the fun is in the first few guesses.
- Check the vowel and repeat hints if stuck. They rarely give the game away.
- Use the personal hint tool before the answer. A single letter hint is usually enough to finish.
- Look up the word afterward. We've learned more new words this way than we'd like to admit.
If you'd rather work it out with a list of candidates, the Wordle Solver shows every word that still fits your colored tiles, and the five letter word finder lets you search by pattern.
Quick answers to common questions
Is today's Wordle the same for everyone? Yes. Everyone gets the same word on the same calendar date. Only the time it unlocks differs, because it follows your local midnight.
Can I play yesterday's Wordle? The official game shows only today's puzzle for free players. You can still see yesterday's answer on our past answers page.
Who picks the words? Wordle was created by Josh Wardle and bought by The New York Times in January 2022. The Times now edits the daily answers.
Why don't you show the answer at the top? Because most people looking for it want a hint first. The answer is one tap away whenever you're ready.
