What Was Yesterday's Wordle? How to Find Any Past Answer

By Five Letter Word Finder Editorial Team · Published Thursday, October 8, 2026

Yesterday's Wordle answer is on our past Wordle answers page, at the top of the list, with its date and puzzle number. It's also on the Wordle Hint Today page under "Yesterday's answers," hidden behind a button so you only see it if you tap. For example, the answer on September 29, 2026 (Wordle #1,928) was SCUBA.

People look up yesterday's word for all kinds of reasons. Maybe you missed a day and want to know what you lost. Maybe your friend won't stop talking about it. Maybe you solved it on luck and want to know what the word actually means. We check it ourselves most mornings, usually right after complaining about it. This guide covers how to find it, why "yesterday" can be confusing, and how to look up any answer ever.

The fastest ways to find yesterday's answer

  • On the past answers page: The list starts with the most recent completed puzzle. Tap any word to see its meaning.
  • On the hint page: Scroll to "Yesterday's answers" on Wordle Hint Today and tap to reveal it.
  • In the checker: If you think you know what it was, type it into the "Has this word been a Wordle answer?" box on the archive page to confirm the date.

We keep today's answer off the archive list on purpose. Today's word has its own button at the top of the page, so you won't spoil a puzzle you haven't played yet while you're looking for an older one.

Why "yesterday" can be confusing

Wordle gives a new puzzle at midnight in your local time zone. That's lovely for players, because everyone starts fresh at their own midnight. It's confusing when you search online, though, because websites are often written on US time.

Here's how it plays out:

  • If you're ahead of the US (Europe, Asia, Australia): your "yesterday" may still be "today" for someone in New York. A site written in the US might show that word as today's answer.
  • If you're behind the US (Hawaii, for example): your "today" may already be "yesterday" for players on the East Coast.
  • Puzzle numbers settle it: Every puzzle has a number. If you know yours, look for that number rather than the date. The number is on your share grid, like "Wordle 1,928 4/6."

Our pages show both the date and the puzzle number for every answer, so you can match whichever you have.

How to find any past Wordle answer

Our past Wordle answers page lists every answer since the first puzzle on June 19, 2021. Here's how it's organized:

  • Grouped by year: 2026 is open at the top. Tap an earlier year to expand it.
  • Date, number and word: Each row shows the date, the puzzle number and the answer.
  • Meanings one tap away: Every word links to our Online Dictionary.
  • Always current: The list updates on its own every night.

As of September 29, 2026, the archive holds 1,928 answers: 196 from 2021, 365 from 2022, 364 from 2023, 366 from 2024 (a leap year), 365 from 2025 and 272 so far in 2026.

How we built the archive

We built the archive because we wanted it for ourselves. We were writing the hints on this site and kept needing to check old answers, and every list we found online was either full of ads, missing days, or spoiled today's answer at the top.

So we collected the answer for every day from June 19, 2021 onward, stored it with its date and puzzle number, and set the site to add each new day automatically. Along the way we found things we hadn't expected. The first answer, CIGAR, came back on February 2, 2026. Words from the game's first months have been reappearing ever since, though not in strict date order.

Checking whether a word was already an answer

For most of Wordle's life, answers never repeated. Players used past answers to rule words out: if a word had already been used, it wouldn't come back. That trick stopped working in 2026.

Our checker still helps, because it tells you when a word was used, not just whether. Type any five-letter word and you'll see:

  • "Yes" with the date and number if it was an answer, or with two dates if it has come back.
  • "No" if it hasn't been an answer up to yesterday.

Here's the list of repeated answers from our archive, through September 29, 2026:

Word First used Used again
CIGAR Jun 19, 2021 Feb 2, 2026
SQUAD Apr 11, 2022 Feb 17, 2026
AWAKE Jun 23, 2021 Feb 21, 2026
LINEN Aug 9, 2021 Mar 3, 2026
GRADE Jul 4, 2021 Mar 15, 2026
IVORY Aug 17, 2021 Mar 27, 2026
COMET Oct 19, 2021 Mar 30, 2026
SANDY Oct 27, 2024 Apr 4, 2026
STAND Aug 15, 2021 Apr 19, 2026
BRING Nov 30, 2021 May 2, 2026

AGREE Aug 28, 2021 May 21, 2026
SMILE Sep 27, 2023 May 30, 2026
THUMB Oct 12, 2021 Jun 7, 2026
BREAK Dec 8, 2021 Jun 12, 2026

Most repeats are words from 2021, which fits the idea of old answers coming back first. A few, like SANDY and SMILE, were first used much more recently, so we don't treat the order as a strict rule.

Why we hide today's answer on the archive page

A lot of answer lists put today's word right at the top, in bold. We understand why, since it's what many visitors want. But we think it's the worst possible design for anyone who hasn't played yet, and that includes people who only came to check yesterday's word.

So our archive does three things differently:

  • Today's answer sits behind a button. You have to tap "Today" on purpose to see it.
  • The list starts with yesterday. The first visible word is always a finished puzzle.
  • The checker ignores today. When you check a word, it only searches answers up to yesterday, so it can't accidentally confirm today's word.

It's a small courtesy, but it matters. A spoiled Wordle can't be unspoiled.

A quick guide to puzzle numbers

If dates confuse you, puzzle numbers are the way out. The rule is simple:

  • Puzzle #0 was June 19, 2021. Its answer was CIGAR.
  • Each day adds one. Puzzle #365 was one year later, and so on.
  • Every player's puzzle has the same number, no matter the time zone.
  • Your share grid shows it. "Wordle 1,928 3/6" means you solved puzzle #1,928 in three guesses.

So if a friend says "Did you get 1,928?", you can find it in our list without worrying about whose yesterday it was. Puzzle #1,928, on September 29, 2026, was SCUBA, and #1,929 fell on September 30.

Use the archive to get better at Wordle

The archive isn't only for settling arguments. Looking through it for ten minutes taught us more about Wordle than a year of playing did.

  • Notice the endings: Scroll through a month and count the words ending in ER, LY, CH or SE. ER alone closes 111 answers so far. Once you expect those endings, they jump out at you mid-game.
  • Notice the doubles: Answers like BLOOD, MESSY, LORRY and PUTTY show up far more often than people expect. About 31% of answers repeat a letter.
  • Notice what's missing: You'll find almost no plurals and very few past tenses. That's a strong hint for which guesses to avoid when you're down to your last two.
  • Notice the first letters: S starts more answers than any other letter, 288 so far, while only two have started with Z.

We turned these patterns into the difficulty rating on our Wordle Hint Today page, which scores each day's word using how common it is, its repeated letters, rare letters and vowels.

More repeated answers

Here are the rest of the repeats in our archive through September 29, 2026, continuing the table above:

BATON Dec 19, 2021 Jul 3, 2026
STOUT Aug 23, 2021 Jul 13, 2026
FLUME Aug 26, 2021 Jul 30, 2026
GRIPE Dec 23, 2021 Aug 6, 2026

FOCUS Mar 13, 2022 Sep 13, 2026
FORTH Aug 13, 2021 Sep 23, 2026

TRACE is a fun one: it's also one of the strongest starting words in our tests, so anyone who opened with it on August 21, 2026 got a very happy first row.

Why yesterday's answer can help today

You might think yesterday's word is useless for today's puzzle. It's less useless than it looks.

  • It's very unlikely to be today's answer. Even with repeats, a word used yesterday hasn't come back the next day in our archive. If you're torn between two words and one was yesterday's answer, pick the other.
  • It shows the editor's taste. Recent answers give you a feel for the kind of words being chosen: everyday words, rarely plurals, often with a repeated letter.
  • It's a vocabulary boost. If yesterday's word was new to you, look it up. You'll recognize it faster next time, and the definition often sticks better when it's tied to a puzzle you struggled with. FLUME, for example, is a water channel or a water slide, and it has now been an answer twice.

What if you missed yesterday's puzzle?

The official game shows today's puzzle to free players. If you missed yesterday, your streak resets, but the answer isn't a secret: it's in the archive. If you want to practice on past puzzles, you can:

  • Use the archive as practice: Pick a random date, cover the word, and try to solve it with the Wordle Solver using the tiles you'd get from your usual opener.
  • Try a fresh puzzle elsewhere: Our Quordle hint and answer finder works for any five-letter guessing game, if you play variants.
  • Brush up on strategy: Our guide to the best Wordle starting words is the fastest way to lose fewer streaks.

Yesterday's answer and your streak

Wordle counts your streak by calendar day in your own time zone. A few things to know:

  • Solving counts, not just playing: A loss ends your streak, even if you played.
  • Late is fine: Solving at 11:59 p.m. still counts for that day.
  • Devices matter: Your stats are saved in your browser unless you're signed in to an NYT account. Switching phones without signing in can reset them.

If you're keeping a long streak alive, the hint page is a gentler rescue than looking at yesterday's word, which won't help with today's.

Quick answers to common questions

What was yesterday's Wordle? It's always the first word in our past answers list, which updates every night, with its date and puzzle number.

What was the first Wordle answer? CIGAR, on June 19, 2021.

Does Wordle repeat answers? It started to in February 2026. We've counted 25 repeats through September 29, 2026.

Why does another site show a different "yesterday"? It's probably using US time. Match the puzzle number instead of the date.

How far back does the archive go? To the very first puzzle, CIGAR, on June 19, 2021. Nothing is missing: every day since then has its answer, date and number.

Is the archive free? Yes, completely. No sign-up, no paywall.

Can I see tomorrow's Wordle? We don't publish future answers. The hint page shows your own date's puzzle once it unlocks at your local midnight.
