E is one of the two most common letters in five-letter words, alongside S. In our list it appears in 5,042 of the 11,454 words. Yet only 266 of them (2.3%) start with E. Most E-words carry the letter in the middle or at the end. That imbalance makes E-initial words a distinctive group, and knowing their structure makes them much easier to find.
This guide explains the patterns. If you just want every word, the full list of five-letter words starting with E has them all, grouped by their first two letters.
Most E-words start with a prefix
Unlike letters such as B or M, which are almost always followed by a vowel, E is usually followed by a consonant. The reason is that many of these words begin with a Latin-derived prefix. These are the most common two-letter openings:
| Opening | Words | Typical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| en- | 31 | Often “in, into”: ENACT, ENJOY, ENTER |
| em- | 29 | EN- before B, M or P: EMBED, EMPTY, EMBER |
| el- | 27 | Varied origins: ELBOW, ELDER, ELECT |
| ex- | 24 | Often “out of”: EXACT, EXIST, EXTRA |
| er- | 22 | Varied origins: ERASE, ERODE, ERROR |
| ea- | 19 | Varied origins: EAGLE, EARTH, EAGER |
In practice, if you know a word starts with E and you have no other clues, it’s worth testing N, X, M and L as the second letter before anything else. Only 34 E-words have a vowel in second place, and many of those, like eagle, earth and eerie, are easy to recognise once you have one more letter.
EX- words and the letter X
EX- is the most useful prefix to know, because it gives you the rare letter X in second place. There are 24 such words in the list:
- exact
- exalt
- exams
- excel
- exeat
- execs
- exert
- exies
- exile
- exine
- exing
- exist
- exits
- exode
- exons
- expat
- expel
- expos
- extol
- extra
- exude
- exuls
- exult
- exurb
If a puzzle confirms X in the word and E at the start, this short list is usually all you need. You can reproduce it with the pattern EX???.
Words that start and end with E
E is a very common final letter, so it’s natural to wonder how many words have E at both ends. There are 44, and they follow a clear shape: E, then usually a consonant, a vowel and a consonant, then a silent E, as in elope, evade and exile.
- eagle
- eagre
- easle
- eathe
- edile
- edite
- educe
- eerie
- eigne
- elate
- elide
- elite
- elope
- elpee
- elude
- elute
- emcee
- emote
- emule
- emure
- emyde
- enate
- endue
- ensue
- enure
- epode
- erase
- erode
- erose
- esile
- etape
- ettle
- etude
- etwee
- evade
- evhoe
- evite
- evohe
- evoke
- exile
- exine
- exode
- exude
- eyrie
The pattern E???E finds these directly. Adding letters to exclude narrows it quickly.
Vowel-heavy E-words
A handful of E-words contain three or more different vowels, which makes them strong opening guesses when you want to test vowels quickly. Examples from the list include ennui, equal, equip, euros. There are 25 in total.
Searching for E-words effectively
- Put E first in the pattern (
E????) or use “Starts with”. The two are equivalent. - If you know the word has a second E, type
EEin “Must include”. E-words with a second E are common because of the silent final E. - If you know there’s only one E, add E to “Exclude” as well as fixing it first. The finder then removes words with a second E, which is often a big cut.
- Think prefix first: EN-, EX-, EM- and EL- together cover a large share of the list.
