How to use the dictionary

1. Type a word and press Define.
2. Read the meanings, grouped by part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb). The most common part of speech comes first.
3. Tap a synonym to look that word up next.
4. Inflected words work too: “apples”, “running” and “happier” show the entries for “apple”, “run” and “happy”, and irregular forms like “ran” or “geese” point to their headword.

What each entry shows

• Definition: a short, plain explanation of each meaning. Up to six meanings are shown per part of speech, starting with the most frequent.
• Pronunciation: in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), where available.
• Example: a sentence or phrase showing the word in use, where the source has one.
• Synonyms: other words with the same meaning, useful for writing and word puzzles.
• Word-game facts: the letter count and points, with a link to check the word in the word checker.

Where the definitions come from

Definitions, examples, synonyms and pronunciations come from Open English WordNet, an openly licensed lexical database of English maintained by linguists, used under the CC BY 4.0 licence. We converted it to a compact format, kept single-word entries, limited the number of senses per part of speech and removed slurs. The dictionary loads only the small file for the letters you type, so lookups are quick even on mobile data.

WordNet focuses on nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, so small function words (“the”, “of”) and most names aren’t included. It is a general-purpose dictionary, not an official reference for any game.
