How to use the word finder
Fill in any of the fields; you don’t need all of them. The finder searches 247,695 words from 2 to 15 letters and groups the results by length, with everyday words listed before rarer ones.
- Starts with / Ends with fix letters at the beginning or end, such as prefixes (UN-, RE-) and endings (-ING, -TION).
- Contains finds letters side by side, in order:
OUGHfinds THOUGHT and ROUGH. - Must include needs each letter somewhere, in any order. Type a letter twice to require two of it.
- Exclude removes every word containing those letters.
- Word length narrows the search to one length. “Any length” searches them all.

How many words can the word finder search?
247,695 English words from 2 to 15 letters, from the public-domain ENABLE list plus dictionary words from SCOWL. Very long words, proper nouns, abbreviations and hyphenated words aren’t included.
Why do I have to enter a letter first?
Listing every word of every length at once isn’t useful and would be slow on phones. One clue is enough to start.
What does “common words first” mean?
Words that appear in the everyday-vocabulary levels of SCOWL, an openly licensed English word list, are listed before rarer words. You can switch to A to Z or most points with the gear icon.
